Mac app

Fyal is also a desktop app: the same application, in its own window, with a Dock icon and the system dialogs for saving. It runs on Intel and Apple Silicon, from macOS 11 (Big Sur).

Download Fyal for Mac Version 1.0.1 · 4 MB · Intel and Apple Silicon

Installing#

  1. Open the downloaded file (Fyal.dmg). A window mounts with the Fyal icon and the Applications folder.
  2. Drag Fyal to Applications. Afterwards you can eject the disk and delete the .dmg.
  3. Open it from Applications or Launchpad. The first time macOS will stop you: keep reading.

“Apple could not verify…”#

Fyal for Mac isn't yet signed with an Apple developer certificate, so the first time you open it macOS shows a warning and won't open it. It's one step, only once:

  1. Close the warning.
  2. System Settings → Privacy & Security. Scroll to the bottom: you'll see “‘Fyal’ was blocked to protect your Mac” and an Open Anyway button.
  3. Open Anyway, and confirm with your password or Touch ID. From then on it opens like any other app.

On earlier macOS versions this also works: right-click Fyal in Applications → Open → Open.

How it behaves#

The app loads www.fyal.es inside its window, with your session saved. That's why it never needs updating: every improvement to Fyal shows up on its own, just like in the browser. You need to be online.

  • On launch, the window appears already at the right size: small if you need to sign in, large if you were already in. It remembers the size you leave it at.
  • Closing the window (⌘W or the red button) doesn't quit the app: it stays in the Dock, and clicking its icon brings it back instantly to the page you were on. Quitting for real is ⌘Q.
  • Moving the window: by the top strip, where the three buttons are. Double-clicking there maximises it.
  • Offline: instead of a blank window, a notice with “Try again”.
  • External links (a resource, the email in the footer) open in your browser or mail app.
  • Saving PDF and CSV: the macOS “Save as…” dialog opens and you choose where.
  • Importing: drag the PDFs or photos from the Finder onto the window, just like in the browser.
  • Theme: the window buttons follow the app's theme, light or dark.

Which version you have#

With the app open, menu Fyal → About Fyal. If it's lower than the one on this page, download the new one and drag it to Applications, replacing the old one.

Requirements#

  • macOS 11 Big Sur or later. One installer covers Intel and Apple Silicon.
  • An internet connection.
  • A Fyal account.

When you'd need to reinstallAlmost never. Only if the Mac app itself changes (not the web it loads): in that case these docs will link the new installer and dragging it to Applications again, replacing the old one, is enough. Your session and data are untouched.
